Prof. Vinod Kumar Sharma

Prof. Vinod Kumar Sharma is the Dean of Faculties and the Senior-most Professor at Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR), Mumbai - An Advanced Research Institute of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and a Deemed to be University focusing on Development Issues. Prof. Sharma is a Civil and Environmental Engineer with a Ph.D. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB), Mumbai and Master’s and Bachelor’s Degrees from M.B.M. University, Jodhpur, Rajasthan. He has been a Post-Doctoral Fellow in USA and Japan and is a Fellow and Chartered Engineer of the Institution of Engineers, India. His professional career spans over 42 years, as an Engineer, Academician and Academic Leader. Prof. Sharma’s involvement in Academic Administration at the Higher Education/ University Level includes his positions as the Dean of the Institute; Dean of Students’ Affairs; Head of the Department; NCC Officer; NSS Officer; and, Hostel Warden; and, as a Member of the Board of Management; Planning & Monitoring Board; Board of Studies; Executive Council; Academic Council and several other Administrative Committees.

Prof. Sharma has a wide range of international experience, across six Continents, including his research as USAEP’s Environmental Fellow at the World Bank, Washington DC, USA; and, Fellow of Science and Technology Ministry (STA) at the NIES of Japan Environment Ministry, Tsukuba, Japan. He has completed several research projects and consultancy assignments for various international organizations, including the UN agencies (UNEP, UNDP, UNCTAD, UN-ESCAP, UNU); American Organizations (USAID, TAF, ICEF, SICI, and IDRC); European Organizations (British Council, CSH, CREED, IIED and DFID); Japanese Organizations (JBIC, APO, IGES, STA, AIST, IDE, NIES, and JETRO); RAS (Russia); ERIA (Indonesia); NTU and NUS (Singapore), etc. His assignments for Indian organizations include projects for the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) and several other Ministries, Government Departments, former Planning Commission, Corporate Sector and NGOs. He has been invited as the Chief Guest, VIP Delegate, Keynote Speaker, Chairman and Panel Member in several academic and business events in India and abroad.

Prof. Sharma has published over 180 papers/ articles in peer reviewed International and Indian journals; newspapers and magazines; books and book chapters; policy reports and conference proceedings. He is on the editorial boards of, and a peer reviewer of international journals published from Germany, The Netherlands, USA, Japan and India. His research and publications have contributed to policy making at the city, state, national and international levels. He has been the author, editor and coordinator of some important Policy Reports, including Reports for the AIST and JETRO, Japan and the ERIA, Indonesia; International Trade and Recycling of Waste Paper for CREED and IIED, Europe; LCA Training Manual for UNEP, France; Maharashtra State Development Report for the former Planning Commission; and State of Environment Report- Maharashtra, for the MoEF&CC, India. He is the Editor of a peer reviewed International Journal for Sustainable Innovations (IJSI); Editor-in-Chief of an E-magazine, SAVITARKA, on sustainable development issues; and, Chairman of International Symposium on a Sustainable Future (ISSF) and International Seminar on Energy, Environment and Development (ISEED). He is the founder President of the Indian Society for Life Cycle Assessment (ISLCA); Member of UNEP’s International Life Cycle Board (ILCB); and, a Founding and Council Member of International Society for Energy Transition Studies (ISETS), Australia.

Prof. Sharma’s broad area of research focuses on “Sustainable Energy, Environment and Development (SEED) issues” and follows an inter-disciplinary approach involving scientific, technological, socio-economic, and policy aspects. Some of his research topics on SEED issues are - Sustainable and Renewable Energy; Resources Conservation; Environmental Protection from Pollution of Air, Water, Solid Waste, and Noise; Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Climate Change; Natural and Environmental Resource Accounting; Trade and Environment Linkages; Sustainability of Coastal Areas; Life Cycle Assessment; and, Civil/ Environmental Engineering Infrastructures.
